Brewery plans b'day festival
A brewery in the region is planning a big birthday party later year — with a lottery system for tickets.
Bell’s Brewery said yesterday that it will host a beer festival, called Funvitational, on Sept. 12, to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
Funvitational will be a beer festival with more than 100 breweries from across the U.S. with local food and live entertainment.
The party will be held at Homer Stryker Field, home of the Kalamazoo Growlers baseball team.
Details of the lottery system to win tickets for the event will be announced in April.
A full list of breweries will also be announced at a later date, but promises to include some breweries not distributing in Michigan.
Larry Bell began Bell’s Brewery as a home-brewing shop in 1983, before selling his first commercial beer in 1985.
At the time, Bell was brewing beer in a 15-gallon soup kettle.
In 1986, Bell brewed 135 barrels of beer — a barrel is 31 gallons. In 2013, Bell’s Brewery brewed nearly 250,000 barrels of beer.
