Retailer eyes one-million mark for Thanksgiving
A local retailer expects to sell one-million turkeys by Thanksgiving.
Meijer said it expects to cross the threshold this Thanksgiving week, with 75-percent sold in the days leading up to the holiday, according to Meijer VP of Foods Tod Pepin.
Meijer customers who spend $30 receive 50 percent off fresh or frozen turkeys. Fresh turkeys are $1.49 per pound, and frozen turkeys are 59 cents a pound.
Top 5 items
Along with its turkey numbers, Meijer shared the top five items sold on Thanksgiving, one of the company’s busiest shopping days: cream cheese, cream of mushroom soup, celery, butter and sweet potatoes.
Meijer said it also sells pre-made Thanksgiving dinners, with orders made 24 hours in advance to ensure availability.
Customers can purchase a turkey or ham dinner for $49.99, which includes green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry salad and Kings Hawaiian dinner rolls. Each meal can feed 8-10 people.
