2018 was a big year for technological advancements, and while 2019 is sure to be an exciting time with new emerging technologies, those in the tech industry will be focusing on ways to leverage existing technologies and apply them in a way that is more useful for consumers.
Our entire world revolves around — and depends upon — technology, and people now have access to technologies that were once only things we dreamed up in movies.
Think about it: within the first 20 minutes of your day you might have been woken up by your iPhone alarm, told Alexa to turn on the coffee pot, started your car from an app on your phone, and asked Siri to give you directions to the nearest book store. This type of consumer technology will only begin to grow and be more integrated into our everyday lives.
Here are some tech trends to keep your eye on in 2019:
Smart home devices
While smart home devices have been around for a few years, 2019 will be all about making devices smarter and getting a wide variety of brands to work together. Think: “Alexa, start my car.” Something like this that works means Amazon and GMC, or any other car brand, have found a way to merge technologies.
From thermostats, light bulbs, smoke detectors, and coffee pots to TVs and robot vacuums, the idea, or the goal, is to have all of your smart home devices working together in unison. Instead of brands focusing solely on how to get consumers to buy their products, they will start looking at how their products can work with others to create a simpler and more enjoyable life experience for their customers.
Whether it is a restaurant, company break room, doctor’s office or hotel, many public spaces are making the shift toward digital signage, as opposed to printed paper signage. While the concept of digital signage is not new, the technology has made leaps and bounds in its capabilities.
Digital signage allows for companies to quickly alter the information that is displayed, instead of manually removing and reposting a paper sign. This way, restaurants can display their up-to-date menu choices, a hotel can provide guests with real-time weather or concierge information, and a company can display internal job announcements or need-to-know company updates in its break room. Interactive digital signage also allows people to interact with the content either via touchscreens, body sensors, or codes via smartphones.
The concept of having things delivered to your doorstep is not new; however, being able to have essentially whatever you want with same-day delivery is revolutionizing the tech industry. Now that consumers have had a taste of real-life instant gratification, brands that don’t offer same-day delivery will no doubt fall by the wayside.
As we closed out 2018, we saw more and more brands hop on the delivery bandwagon, like Panera, Walmart, Costco and others. This will only continue in 2019, and brands will have to figure out how to make delivery a profitable option.
5G has long been a confusing topic within the tech industry, as insiders weren’t quite sure how to nail down what exactly 5G is, but just that it would revolutionize the industry. With an increase in technology that heavily relies on wireless connectivity, 5G, which is the next generation of a super-fast mobile broadband connection, will be key for connecting “things.”
Much of 2018 was spent field testing 5G devices, while 2019 likely will be the year the first 5G-capable smartphones hit the market. Users will see exponentially faster download or upload speeds and the time it takes devices to communicate with each other will drastically decrease, creating a lightning fast and seamless mobile experience.
Technology is always changing and advancing, and 2019 will be a year for making technology faster, smarter and more user friendly.
