The Fair Housing Center of West Michigan will host the 32nd annual Fair Housing Luncheon & Workshop Series on April 25 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Lisa Rice, president and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance, will provide the luncheon keynote. The luncheon will feature must-see poetry performances by local students who win the 2019 Fair Housing Poetry Contest, hosted with the help of FHCWM partners/poets Rachel Gleason and Grand Rapids Poet Laureate Marcel “Fable” Price. There are three morning workshops to choose from. Tonika Johnson (Resident Association of Greater Englewood) will anchor a workshop to share her powerful multimedia project, “Folded Map”, which illustrates Chicago's residential segregation while bringing residents together for a conversation. Fred Freiberg (Fair Housing Justice Center) and Amy Nelson (Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana) will join the FHCWM’s Elizabeth Stoddard in a workshop dedicated to highlighting recent fair housing case settlements, current systemic incidents and trends of housing discrimination. Marisa Novara (Metropolitan Planning Council) will anchor the third workshop to discuss her Cost of Segregation project, including policy and action plans; the project is evaluating what communities pay in lost income, lives and potential as a result of segregation.
